Wonkwang University launch Medical Volunteer Program at Gerehu Hospital
A 12-MEMBER team from Wonkwang University in South Korea arrived in Papua New Guinea to deliver volunteer medical support at Gerehu General hospital.
They provided treatments using Korean traditional medicine, including acupuncture and physical therapy devices.
“We’re focused on how to build the relation and how to activate the industry in PNG. Now I heard there are some projects between Wonkwang University and Papua New Guinea. So, we are also interested in developing the projects” Prof. Choi said.

He plans future aid, possibly partnering with local groups like Caritas, after observing the hospital’s needs.
원광대학교(대한민국) 소속 12명으로 구성된 팀이 파푸아뉴기니의 게레후 종합병원(Gerehu General Hospital)에서 의료 봉사활동을 위해 현지에 도착했다.
이들은 침술과 물리치료 기기 등 한국 전통의학을 활용해 치료했다.
최 교수는 “파푸아뉴기니와의 관계를 어떻게 구축할 것인지, 그리고 현지 산업을 어떻게 활성화할 것인지에 초점을 두고 있다. 현재 원광대학교와 파푸아뉴기니 간에 몇 가지 프로젝트가 진행 중인 것으로 알고 있다. 그래서 우리도 그 프로젝트들을 발전시키는 데 관심이 있다.”고 말했다.
그는 병원의 필요 사항을 살펴본 뒤, 카리타스(Caritas)와 같은 현지 단체들과의 협력을 포함한 향후 지원 방안을 계획하고 있다고 밝혔다.
